Introduction
This is the second book of stories, essays, and poems that I’ve published. lt was a long time coming. Jewish Wry and Other Slices of Life. came out in 2015. It’s hard for me to believe it took so long for this new book to appear.
Get the paperback at Amazon or get the Kindle version (also at Amazon.).
In all that time, the pile of things I’ve written has gradually become a small mountain of writing that I am eager to see in print. I’ve gone to school to study creative writing. I’ve attended writing workshops to improve my skills. All the while I’ve been reading like a writer—not just for the content of the piece, but also to study the structure and language that made the reading worthwhile.
Organizing the sections of this book was a challenge. How to group the pieces in some meaningful way seemed imperative. A mixture of all forms and ideas just wouldn’t do. I decided to divide the book into three sections. The first section, “In Brooklyn,” contains all the prose set in my beloved hometown, that big panoramic borough where millions of people from all different backgrounds live side by side. The second section, “Out of Brooklyn,” contains all the prose I wrote outside that setting. The third section, “Poetry from Everywhere,” is all poetry, serious and humorous poems all mixed together.

Back cover description:
“You can take the girl out of Brooklyn, but you can’t take Brooklyn out of the girl.“
Reading Martha Reingold’s second collection of stories, essays and poems, The Girl Out of Brooklyn reawakens the joy of growing up in the “Borough of Churches” and the sadness of leaving it behind.
Brooklyn has the beach and the boardwalk and the majestic Brooklyn Bridge. It has Prospect Park and Grand Army Plaza. Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach. Coney Island and Nathan’s famous frankfurters…
Martha cherishes the memory of Brooklyn Heights and its iconic view of Manhattan, the three bridges that span the East River, the Statue of Liberty, and the everchanging New York skyline. She recalls her early education in the story, “Christmas at PS 152” and in her pean to her high school days in the essay “Oh Midwood, Midwood…”
Pick up this little gem and immerse yourself in this book. It will touch your heart, your soul, and your mind with its wonderful sense of nostalgia that is certain to remind you of earlier times.
