Martha Reingold was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935. She stayed close to home where she walked to public school, high school and Brooklyn College. She graduated college in 1956 and entered the fledgling computer industry. It suited her just fine. She was a career woman before the term “women’s lib” was ever invented. She retired in 2015 after 60 active years.
Just before she retired, Martha began to write. She started with some autobiographical work, but soon started writing all manner of short pieces. Her first book, Jewish Wry and Other Slices of Life, was published in 2015. It is a collection of stories, essays and poems that reflect her Brooklyn Jewish past.
Martha completed a second book, The Girl Out of Brooklyn. It is another collection of short pieces again reflecting her Brooklyn Jewish life. The opening story, “Christmas in PS 152” and the essay, “Oh Midwood, Midwood…” are both tributes to the colorful and wonderful education she received at those Brooklyn schools.
Now Martha is going full steam ahead. She just published a book entitled The Seabury Scribblers Present… a book based on her experiences as a volunteer at Seabury Waltman. The Waltman is a mental health support facility where all manner of dementia and brain disease patients live. While working there, Martha created a poetry writing program. The book contains the poetry that the patients wrote along with Martha’s description of the Waltman, the residents and the poetry. It includes all the poetry the group produced.
